The Community

Shepherdstown supports many ministries throughout our local area. Check out some of the missions we work with on a yearly basis.

New Hope Ministries is a Christian social service agency that shows the love and hope of Christ by serving our neighbors in times of need and supporting their efforts toward stability.

We strive to provide the following: spiritual nurture, pastoral care, recreation, advocacy, and opportunities for cross-cultural understanding through networking with area churches, community agencies, and employers to improve the quality of life for all persons in the fruitbelt.

We have been able to provide resources of a great range, from household goods, computers and medical supplies, as well as our partnership with UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), to assist in times of emergency. We have provided aid to people in need for every major weather disaster since 2002. Did you know that your support helped Mission Central send more than $1.3 million in resources to hurricane affected areas in 2017?

More than 65 years ago, Rev. Everett Swanson flew to South Korea to minister to American troops fighting in the Korean War. During his time there, he grew increasingly troubled by the sight of hundreds of war orphans living on the streets, abandoned by society.

One morning he saw city workers scoop up what looked like piles of rags and toss them into the back of a truck. He walked up to the truck for a closer look — and was horrified to see that the "piles" were not rags, but the frozen bodies of orphans who had died overnight in the streets.

Appalled, Rev. Swanson began including this experience into his revival meetings, and Christians responded by donating funds to purchase rice and fuel for the orphans. Within 10 years, 108 orphanages and homes in South Korea were receiving support.

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world.

YouthWorks provides Christ-centered mission trips for more than 20,000 teenagers and adult leaders in over 45 communities across the U.S. and beyond. We believe that these kinds of mission trip experiences positively impact the communities we partner with, the teenagers who are stretched and challenged through a week of service, and the adult leaders who build mission trips into the ongoing discipleship of their teenagers.

The Gideons International is an Association of Christian business and professional men and their wives dedicated to telling people about Jesus through associating together for service, sharing personal testimony, and by providing Bibles and New Testaments. While we are often recognized for our work with hotels, we also place and distribute Scriptures in strategic locations so they are available to those who want them, as well as to those who may not know they need them.
